Callanish
From the Standing Stones Collection
The Callanish Standing Stones are an extraordinary cross shaped setting of stones on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
They were an important place of ritual activity for at least 2000 years. The best guess as to their significance is that they are some form of astronomical observatory.
As the archaeologist Patrick Ashmore said in the 1980s “ Every 18 years the moon skims low over the southern hills and it seems to dance along the stones like a great god visiting the earth”.

Standing Stones Collection

The ancients with their natural reading of nature and shamanistic outlook had the same desire to aesthetically embellish their habitat as we do today. At this moment, I believe we have a lot to gain from the power of simplicity.

As we emerge from under the shadow of Covid my mind and eye has turned to simpler times when shape and form had a powerful significance through their simplicity and scale. I feel a need for simple organic form that can bring calm to the chaos.
